Description
This course aims to provide users with a broad overview of turbulence models used in numerical simulations. The theories and assumptions leading to the concept of turbulence modeling, the resulting models, and current applications in industry are addressed in detail. In particular, Navier-Stokes equations treated according to the RANS approach and the two main classes derived from them, namely Eddy Viscosity models (k-ε, Shear Stress Transport (SST), transition models) and Reynolds Stress models (RSM), as well as the recent EARSM and SAS models, are introduced. The second main turbulence modeling approach, called Scale Resolving Simulation (SRS), is also explained, which finds application in advanced models such as Large Eddy Simulation (LES) and all models derived from it (DES, SBES, etc.). Finally, issues involving wall treatment and turbulent transition are addressed in detail. These aspects are particularly useful for simulations of external aerodynamics, flows separating from walls, and heat transfer issues.
Target Audience
The course is intended for CFD engineers who intend to perform thermo-fluid dynamic simulations as part of product design and/or optimization.
Pre-requisites
Basic knowledge of fluid mechanics is recommended. Previous participation in the basic CFD course is strongly recommended.
