Description

The course covers the setup of CFD simulations in systems with multiphase flows (solid, liquid, and gas phases). In the first session, the course introduces the Volume Of Fluid (VOF) method, which allows simulating the evolution of the free surface between two or more immiscible phases, such as the air-water interface in an agitated tank. In the second session, the course presents two methods for modeling multiphase flows with dispersed phases, such as bubbles in a fluidized bed reactor or droplets in a combustion chamber. The first method is the Lagrangian method, which treats dispersed phases as particles or droplets that interact with the continuous phase and with each other through drag, lift, and collision forces. The second method is the Eulerian-Eulerian method, which treats each phase as a continuous fluid and solves the conservation equations for each phase, taking into account the interactions between the phases via source terms. The course also shows how to model the exchange of mass, momentum and energy between the different phases, choosing from the various models available based on the characteristics of the problem to be analyzed. In addition, the course provides guidance on setting boundary conditions and solver control parameters, which are crucial to ensure convergence and reliability of the analysis. The course includes hands-on sessions, in which pre-configured exercises are offered, both benchmarking and applying to relevant industrial cases.

Target Audience

The course is intended for CFD engineers who intend to perform thermo-fluid dynamic simulations as part of product design and/or optimization.

Pre-requisites

Basic knowledge of fluid mechanics is recommended. Previous participation in the basic CFD course is strongly recommended.
