Description
The course is intended to provide users with useful guidance for the proper setting of fluid-structure interaction (FSI) problems through the use of specific applications for multiphysics modeling, capable of operating both mechanical and fluid dynamic treatment simultaneously. The way FEM and CFD solvers interact will be illustrated in relation to applications with the presence of fluid dynamic loads in normal (pressure) and tangential directions and/or thermal loads.
The course provides information on setup, solution and convergence for simulations with one-way and two-way coupling. During the various sessions, it will be described, including practical examples, how to set up FSI problems of both the one-way type, where fluid dynamic loads generate only negligible deformations on solids, and the two-way type, where loads and deformations are strongly coupled, thus requiring bi-directional data exchange between CFD and FEM solvers.
Target Audience
The course is intended for CFD engineers who intend to perform thermo-fluid dynamic simulations as part of product design and/or optimization.
Pre-requisites
Basic knowledge of mechanics and fluid mechanics is recommended. Previous participations in the basic CFD course and in the basic mechanical course are strongly recommended.
