Structural optimization for space industry components is a key-factor to increase the products competitiveness. The lower structural weight enables to increase performance and / or payload, and in the specific case of launchers, these increases grow as the structural mass of the components of the last stages decreases. The VEGA-C Interstage 2/3 separation system, developed as part of an ESA project (whose prime contractor is AVIO SpA and CIRA is a subcontractor) plays a primary role, being responsible for ensuring correct execution of separation between the second (Z40) and the third stage (Z9). The structural elements of this system constitute the so-called Separation Spring Assembly.
The design of these components was carried out with ad hoc developed optimization procedures that exploit the potential of commercial FE softwares and modeFRONTIER as process integration and optimization platform. The final products are characterized by extremely high specific load capacity (applied load / component mass) in compliance with the severe functional requirements imposed.
