MASTA is a suite for the complete design, analysis and optimisation of mechanical transmissions, encompassing numerous advancing forms of analysis from static deflection to component fatigue and NVH.
MASTA integrates seamlessly into any phase of the product development cycle. Suitable for tasks ranging from rapid initial feasibility analysis and preliminary design to in-depth analysis of system performance or individual components. MASTA incorporates a wide range of modelling and analysis methodologies which facilitate investigation into numerous issues relevant to transmission design.

These include:

  • Component ratings to various international standards considering both static and fatigue
  • Advanced full system deflection analysis
  • Gear macro and micro geometry development, along with the simulation of the gear manufacturing process
  • Loaded Tooth Contact Analysis (LTCA) to investigate gear contact and transmission error
  • NVH simulation and optimisation including sidebands generated due to modulation

Critical components such as housings or asymmetric shafts can be incorporated as FE models, facilitating a high-fidelity calculation of system stiffness and performance. Users can generate FE components externally to the software, generate FE within MASTA itself or directly transfer CAD geometry to MASTA for near instant conversion to an applicable FE format.
MASTA’s interface and workflow are simple and intuitive. Transmission construction and analysis is carried out on a single model and all within software environment, with a consistent layout to minimise the learning curve for new users.
Compatible with Windows 10, MASTA is highly adaptable to different hardware configurations. Modelling and analysis is performed utilising methods which minimise time requirements but maintain high fidelity results accuracy. Non-essential detail can easily be stripped from a model to facilitate smooth performance on all hardware configurations whilst maintaining identical numerical results.

Acoustics and Dynamics simulation

MASTA capabilities in NVH and dynamics simulation are unreached by other similar suites. The user can build the model for fatigue analyses and perform on the same system a modal analysis, a harmonic simulation by meshing forces or external excitations, whichever this is. This characteristic defines MASTA as a must to have suite to design transfer gearboxes for electrification purposes, as an example.

The same MASTA model can be the base for a time domain flexible components multibody analysis to analyse run-ins, clutch-ins, braking transients within a complete mechanical system. It is also possible to introduce the whole MASTA model within a Simulink block to develop and simulate the control system acting on the transmission, giving MASTA the capability to drive the simulation and optimisation of a complete power transmission mechatronic device.

System Design

From basic concept models to fully detailed transmission systems, MASTA provides users with simple and intuitive modelling tools. Users can generate and assess concept transmission layouts in a matter of minutes or model existing transmission layouts with ease from engineering drawings or 3D CAD models in SpaceClaim.

It easy to incorporate components from all corners of the transmission industry within a full system model simulation. From CVT’s and torque converters to Asymmetric gears and cycloidal drives, MASTA has you covered.

Going deeply with investigations on geared system transmissions, users can include critical components such as detailed housings or complex shafts as FE components for accurate calculation of system stiffness.

Once modelled the complete transmission or part of it, it is easy to explore changes in transmission layout, component design, materials and manufacturing processes in the convenience of a user-friendly virtual environment.

System Development

MASTA offers different tools for developing every mechanical transmission system. By means of that, users can harness a wide range of visual and numerical results tools to understand transmission performance under load. This can be assessed referring to a single system state or giving users the power to observe the system at different points in its rotation. MASTA includes powerful analysis capabilities to reveal critical data in order to create a robust transmission design.

The research of the optimum design in the defined working conditions can be performed by hands - by expert users - or by means of specialised tool. Users can employ critical early-stage optimisation tools to determine efficient system configurations before performing any detailed design or analysis. Users can derive gear ratios, optimise power density, develop gear macro or micro geometry so that to streamline the transmission development process or determine the effect of design or condition changes using MASTA’s Parametric Study Tool or RUNNA, to drive design changes by Excel. Last, but not the least, scripting in MASTA allow the users to embed inside the software "in house" methods and software.

Gear design and manufacturing

Gear design is an easy go in MASTA. All the features embedded drive the user during the whole design process, helping him when the road become too rough: this is the main target of MASTA software developers. So the user can develop effective gear macro geometry using powerful design, analysis and optimisation tools developed specifically for gears.
